It has been quite some time since our last episode (sorry), we took a break from Rooster HQ to focus on our REAL businesses.

But now we’re back with our SouthStart series, which we’re excited about. We’re interviewing some of the stars of the Southstart Conference, which celebrates the collision of people, ideas and technology in Adelaide on November 21 to 23.

And first cab off the rank is the man behind SouthStart in 2018, Craig Swann. SouthStart fell into the hands of Craig and his business partners last year, and he has done an amazing job pulling together a world class event and activating an 'interesting' startup community in Adelaide.

Craig is a highly successful global innovator, in his own right. The Canadian founded companies in New York City, including award winning interactive agency CRASHMEDIA and the internet’s first online music studio, Looplabs.

Millions of people have benefited from Craig’s innovations, including Steve Jobs, who demoed Looplabs for the launch of the Safari Browser at an Apple Keynote. Craig has since become an industry thought leader in the interactive music space; authoring books, speaking internationally, teaching, curating technology events and developing and licensing customized online music experiences for top global brands.

He has received special recognition at SxSW and has won the prestigious Webby Award.

Before we get into Craig’s fascinating story, make sure you open your browser now and check out southstart.co. Southstart is activating Adelaide’s startup community by bringing together innovators, creators, founders and investors on November 22 and 23, in 2018 .. get involved, grab a ticket and we’ll see you there. If you’re late to this interview and have realised you’ve missed the event, make sure you sign up to the mailing list and follow Southstart on social media, and join the community.

Andrew has worked with Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Queen, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, The Police, Bob Dylan, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Justin Bieber .. to name just a few of the huge names he has acted for as a promoter or agent.

He worked alongside Bob Geldof on the famous Live Aid concert and partied with the likes of Freddie Mercury. It's a remarkable career for a man born in Blyth, in country South Australia. After finishing university in 1974, Andrew went backpacking through Europe and took a job as a stage hand at Hammer-Smith Odeon. He never looked back.

The globally acclaimed Simon Phillips is arguably Australia's top theatre director. His directing credits range from the contemporary to Shakespearean classics, musicals to Opera. He has been the go-to man for shows such as Love Never Dies, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Cabaret and High Society to name just a few .. and has too many awards to list in this intro. When he's not in Australia he's at New York's Broadway, London's West End or en route to another show opening on the other side of the world. Simon is a born director. He started directing classmates as an 8-year old in New Zealand and hasn't stopped since. His path has included director roles at the State Theatre Company of South Australia, Melbourne Theatre Company and Opera Australia, and says his rise has been due to a mix of good luck and hard work. Simon talks about what makes a memorable performance, how he deals with criticism, what separates the stars (such as actor Geoffrey Rush) from the rest, the balance of creative and commercial .. and so much more. To remove a burn you need a six inch blade and a steady hand, our guest Dr John Greenwood says. This is a day in the life of the renowned plastic surgeon and Medical Director of the Adult Burn Centre at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Dr Greenwood looks after 450 acute burns patients each year across South Australia, Northern Territory and parts of New South Wales and Victoria. He heads up Australia's only mobile burn response unit, and in the aftermath of the Bali bombings worked a 36 hour shift treating victims and saving lives. Working in a world of life and death, Dr Greenwood shares his learnings about the will to live, resilience and responding to trauma. Outside of surgery, Dr Greenwood is leading groundbreaking research and developing innovative new products that will soon achieve his goal to replace the skin graft .. it's fascinating, and includes the development of what we can only describe as a "skin factory". He's an englishman who was crowned an Australian of the Year, and a music lover with a dark sense of humour. In 2002, the Bali bombings changed Nick Deegan's world forever. Nick's older brother, Josh, lost his life in the Sari nightclub explosions. Nick talks about how his family responded to tragedy, how music has helped with the healing process, and what good can come from the worst of times. A well known Adelaide musician, Nick found success with bands Foreshore and Galleon, but also shared the business and personal challenges of trying to make it in music. He comes from a talented and well known family - a creative mother, Angie, and prominent lawyer, Brian. As a result Nick is a rare breed, able to combine music with a physiotherapy practice and also law studies. With such a diverse range of life experiences to draw on, enjoy insights from Nick Deegan on Rooster Radio.
